A History Lesson: The Tutu

There’s more to every ballerina’s staple skirt than meets the eye.

Did you know that the first tutus date back to 16th century France where they were worn in the Renaissance courts and palaces? That’s quite some history!  More curious still is that Louis XIV (also known as Louis the Great or the Sun King), monarch of the House of Bourbon and ruler of France from 1643 to 1715, helped propel the tutus status by founding the Académie Royale de Danse (the first dance institute in the whole of the West). It was here that ballet (and tutus) found their rightful home, making a sweet transition from the courts to the stage.

The Romantic eras of the 18th and 19th centuries – which supported opulent and over the top aesthetics – renamed our favorite tulle skirt, “the romantic tutu.” Dancers could choose from one of two styles – a standalone skirt or a Basque with a dropped waist. Infamous ballerina Marie Taglioni – a key figure in central European arts and the first to dance, “en pointe” – often wore the romantic tutu when she performed on stage.

Next up came, “the classic tutu,” and, “the bell tutu,” – two skirts which the world has grown to love and revere as ultimate, ethereal style statements. The classic tutu is shorter in nature, revealing the ballet dancers lithe legs. The bell tutu is longer than its classic counterpart, but bares more layers than its Romantic era sister.

Modern tutus are not just for the ballet or for the mysterious realm of the fairies.
